Kelsey Martinez’s Bio:

St-woa Kokodki U’vi – O’odham Owned & Operated Artisan Business. Shap’a masma? Si sapa thakum nei. Ani an ab cegig Kelsey Martinez, en amjed Ge’e Ki, Keli Akimal.
How are you? My heart is happy to see you. My name is Kelsey Martinez. I’m an O’odham/Dine’ woman. I live in District 3, Sacaton, within the Gila River Indian Community. As an Akimal O’odham woman whose goal is to share traditional craftsmanship with Native youth, my business focuses on creating products tailored to each participant:
custom traditional footwear through leatherwork; the su:sk is a stapled element of O’odham regalia that protects against the desert elements. Traditional beaded jewelry, the baiuka, features multi-strand beads adorned with shells and pearls. Thus, the business’s name St-woa Kokodki Uv’i, meaning White Shell Women, pays homage to the O’odham belief in the protection of wearing shells, as it protects the sea creatures from harm, as well as paying homage to the Dine’ deity Yoolgaii Asdzaa, meaning
White Shell Women, who is a sacred female figure in Dine’ Creation stories, with a strong connection to water and nature. My goal in facilitating regalia-making workshops is to teach O’odham youth and adults how to create these pieces of O’odham regalia (su:sk & biauka), in the hope that the craftsmanship will encourage pride & reconnection to the O’odham Him:dag.
